Types of UK student visas

A UK student visa is issued for three purposes:

  • General Student Visa (Tier 4 Student visa)
  • Student Visa (Tier 4 Child Student Visa)
  • Short-term student visa

UK General Student Visa Tier 4 Student visa

To obtain a study visa and study at universities and colleges in the UK, you should consider a general student visa. This visa is issued to applicants for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, and the age requirement for its issuance is over 16 years old.

Tier 4 Child Student Visa

The UK student visa is for studying in schools in the UK. This visa is issued to individuals under the age of 16 and allows the individual to study in all schools.

Short-term student visa

The short-term study visa is suitable for those who want to take part in short courses of study in the UK. With this UK study visa, you can stay and study in the UK for a maximum of eleven months.

UK student visa extension

The expiry date of a UK student visa depends on the level of study and the length of time you study. Generally, the visa will expire four months after you finish your course.
If you want to stay in the UK after you graduate, you will need to apply for a work visa to allow you to stay and look for work for a period of two years. You can also apply for a UK work visa and extend your visa for a longer period if you find a suitable job in the country.

Please note that the short-term study visa is not extendable or convertible to other types of visas.

What are the steps to obtain a student visa?

The general path and conditions for obtaining a UK student visa are:

  • Having financial means for living and studying
  • Valid and official acceptance letter
  • English language certificate such as IELTS Academic
  • Translation and original of all previous educational certificates

How long does it take to issue a student visa?

After receiving admission, you must obtain a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from your desired university or educational institution.

Acceptable financial means to obtain a student visa

As we said, one of the conditions for obtaining a UK study visa is having financial means, but how much should this financial means be? The amount of financial means for studying in different cities in the UK is different. For example, the financial means required to study in London is 1,334 pounds per month, and 1,023 pounds per month is sufficient for studying in other cities.
By having this amount of financial means, you prove to the British Embassy that you can afford to study in the UK. If you have a sponsor, you must explain the financial documents and their relationship to you to the embassy. Students who received scholarships only need to attach a minimum financial means and a letter of funding to their application.

The exact amount of financial support is stated in your letter of acceptance, or CAS.

How much does it cost to issue a student visa?

As we said at the beginning, there are three types of UK study visas, and their costs vary. To get a student visa, you have to pay 348 pounds. For a short-term visa, you have to pay a minimum of 97 pounds and a maximum of 186 pounds. This cost depends on the duration of your visa.
The cost of obtaining a visa is not limited to this. To obtain a visa, you must also pay for health insurance, which currently costs £886 per year. Other costs will be calculated depending on the number of years of study and residence in the country.

Student visa rejection

There is a possibility that all types of UK visa applications will be rejected, and the following can be considered the most important reasons for student visa rejection:

Working in the UK with a student visa

You cannot work full-time in the country with a student visa and must work part-time. The maximum working hours allowed for students of all levels in the UK are 20 hours per week. Of course, keep in mind that the cost of living in the UK is not low at all and students cannot cover all their living expenses with a 20-hour work week and need sponsorship and financial assistance.

Benefits of a UK student visa

Why should we try to study in the UK? What is the special situation of this country that will help us grow personally and improve our future employment prospects? Living, working and studying in the UK is a fantastic opportunity for a student with big dreams. By obtaining a UK study visa, you can:

  • Study at Europe’s oldest and top-ranked universities.
  • Enjoy the opportunity to live in a developed country.
  • Take on part-time jobs while you study.
  • After completing your studies, convert your student visa to a work visa.
  • If you meet the appropriate conditions, apply for permanent residence in the UK.
