Table of contents

Applicants who live in a country where the United States does not run consular services have to apply at a US mission abroad, and the US Embassy in Ankara is one of the places where fingerprinting, document submission and the visa interview take place. Before you book anything, you need accurate information on the embassy address, the documents required, how appointments work and where to stay nearby. This article covers all of it.

Status as of 6 October 2026. Proclamation 10998, in force since 1 January 2026, continues the suspension of entry for Iranian nationals that began on 9 June 2025 under Proclamation 10949, and covers those who were outside the United States without a valid visa on 1 January 2026. The State Department’s page on the suspension, last updated 2 February 2026, says it fully suspended visa issuance to Iranian nationals in all nonimmigrant and immigrant categories, with limited exceptions. The embassy’s visa page says applicants subject to the proclamation may still apply and attend interviews but may be ineligible for visa issuance or admission. State’s list of nonimmigrant visa posts (visitor, student and other temporary visas) names Dubai as the post for Iran, but the US mission in the UAE says routine visa processing is not available in the UAE at this time.

What to know before you go

Now that you know how to get there and where to stay, here are the points to keep in mind on the day, and while you prepare your documents and book your appointment.

  • Consular services are by appointment only. Waiting times at missions in the region can run to several months for student, visitor and other categories.
  • Prepare your documents against the checklist for your visa category and bring them with you. You may be asked to hand over some documents during the interview, and the online application form must be completed in advance.

If you do not know Ankara or its traffic, plan carefully so you arrive on time, and be there 15 minutes before your appointment time, as the embassy asks. Do not bring prohibited items such as electronic devices, bags, backpacks, purses or liquids.

A US visa application looks daunting at the start, but careful attention to detail, a complete set of documents and a clear account of the purpose of your trip put your application in the best position it can be. The decision itself rests with the consular officer.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Which US missions in the region handle applicants who apply from a third country? As of 6 October 2026, the State Department’s list of nonimmigrant visa posts (for visitor, student and other temporary visas) names Dubai as the post for Iran, but the US mission in the UAE says routine visa processing is not available in the UAE at this time. Its list of immigrant visa posts (for people moving permanently) names Ankara and Yerevan for Iran. A State Department notice, last updated 15 July 2026, says that if the United States is not conducting routine nonimmigrant visa operations in your country, you must apply at the designated embassy or consulate unless you live elsewhere, and you must be able to show that residence. If you apply neither in your country of nationality or residence nor at the designated post, it may be harder to qualify and fees are not refunded.
  2. Which of these cities is cheapest to travel to? Istanbul and Yerevan are usually the most economical for travel and accommodation, if you are able to apply there.
  3. When is the US Embassy in Ankara closed? The embassy closes for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, and for Turkish public holidays including Ataturk Memorial Day, Victory Day, Republic Day, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Consular services pause in both Ankara and Istanbul on those days.
