Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)

Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)

Alberta's own route to Canadian permanent residence

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) selects candidates whose skills match the occupations Alberta’s labour market is short of. Because the province nominates directly, it can be a faster and more targeted route than the federal pools alone. If you have relevant work experience, a valid language test and a genuine plan to settle in Alberta, this is a programme worth assessing. Alberta nominates; only IRCC grants permanent residence.

Frequently asked questions

Which language tests does the AAIP accept?

For English the AAIP accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core, which was approved for immigration purposes in early 2024. For French it accepts TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Results must be less than two years old on the day you apply, and each stream sets its own minimum Canadian Language Benchmark.

The usual grounds are criminal or security inadmissibility, an outstanding refugee claim or a removal order in Canada, holding an active AAIP nomination or notification of interest under another stream, and forms that are incomplete or inconsistent with the supporting documents. Giving false or misleading information is misrepresentation, which carries a five-year bar under section 40 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Yes, while your federal profile is still in the pool you can update it at any time, and a new test result may change your CRS score. Once you have been invited to apply the profile is locked, and changes are reported to IRCC through the web form instead. Documents for the AAIP itself are only ever uploaded through the official AAIP portal.

Occupation lists and stream criteria change during the year. Check the Alberta government AAIP updates page, or ask a licensed representative, an RCIC or a Canadian lawyer, what a change means for your file.

The AAIP exists to fill labour shortages in the province. Streams, occupation lists and intake limits are adjusted as Alberta’s labour market shifts and as the province agrees its annual nomination allocation with the federal government.

The offer must be genuine, in writing and signed by both the Alberta employer and you. It has to set out the duties, the hours and the wage, cover continuous full-time work of at least 12 months, and pay at or above the wage floor the AAIP publishes for that occupation. Your Alberta employer must be incorporated or registered under an Act of a provincial, territorial or federal legislature, operate an established place of business in Alberta, and have been in continuous, active operation in Alberta for at least two complete fiscal years. You cannot be nominated on a job offer from a business you have an interest in: independent contractors, temporary agency workers and business owners are ineligible, including anyone recorded as a director, shareholder or agent of the Alberta employer on Alberta’s Corporate Registry System (CORES).

Do you meet these requirements?

Have your profile reviewed before you file. A careful check of your work history, language results and stream choice avoids the errors that most often lead to a refusal and a second set of fees.

Alberta Advantage Immigration Program requirements and streams

Alberta is one of Canada’s largest provinces and a steady destination for skilled workers and students. Its economy runs on energy, agriculture, construction, health care and a growing technology sector, and the province operates its own immigration streams alongside the federal ones.
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is Alberta’s dedicated route for attracting skilled workers and entrepreneurs. A nomination under the AAIP supports a permanent residence application to IRCC. Before looking at the streams in detail, it helps to know the province itself.

Alberta Advantage Immigration Program

What is life in Alberta like?

Alberta sits in western Canada, between the Rocky Mountains and the prairies, and takes in a large share of the country’s new arrivals each year. Calgary and Edmonton offer an active labour market, publicly funded health care and well-regarded schools and universities. The cost of living in Alberta, Calgary for example, is generally lower than in British Columbia or Ontario, and Alberta charges no provincial sales tax. That is a large part of why students, investors and entrepreneurs settle there.

What is the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program?

The AAIP is Alberta’s provincial nominee programme. It does not grant permanent residence: it issues a provincial nomination, and you then apply to IRCC, which decides the permanent residence application. Alberta assesses candidates on factors such as age, education, work experience and language ability, and runs separate streams for workers and for entrepreneurs.

Alberta Opportunity Stream

The Alberta Opportunity Stream is for people already working in Alberta on a valid work permit who hold a full-time job offer from their Alberta employer in an eligible occupation. You must show recent work experience in the same occupation, meet the minimum language score set for that occupation’s TEER category, and hold at least a high school qualification assessed against Canadian standards.

Alberta Express Entry Stream

The second route is the Alberta Express Entry Stream. You must already have an active federal Express Entry profile sitting in the pool. You cannot apply to this stream directly: Alberta searches the pool and sends a Notification of Interest to the candidates it wants, and only then can you submit an AAIP application.

The core requirements are:

  • Valid language test results
  • Work experience in an occupation Alberta has identified as needed
  • A detailed CV that matches your Express Entry profile

Factors such as a close relative living in Alberta, Canadian study or work experience, or experience in a high-demand occupation make a candidate more likely to be selected.

What are the Alberta Express Entry Stream requirements?

Alberta screens the federal pool against its own criteria. In outline, a candidate must:

  1. Hold an active federal Express Entry profile
  2. Have a first occupation that supports economic development in Alberta
  3. Have indicated Alberta as a province of interest
  4. Have a Comprehensive Ranking System score of at least 300

A job offer, Canadian study or work experience, or close family in the province all improve the odds of receiving a Notification of Interest. None of them guarantees one.

Tourism and Hospitality Stream

Introduced in 2024, this stream is for people already working in Alberta in hospitality roles such as food service, hotels, front desk and kitchen work, where the employer supports the application.

AAIP entrepreneur streams

Entrepreneurs can also apply under the AAIP. Alberta runs several business streams, each with its own investment level, net worth requirement and community or institution involvement:

StreamPurpose of the application
Farm StreamStart a business in agriculture
Graduate Entrepreneur StreamStart a business in Alberta – for graduates of approved Alberta institutions
Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur StreamStart a business in Alberta – for graduates of non-Canadian institutions
Rural Renewal StreamSupport the renewal of Alberta’s rural communities

Rural Renewal Stream

The Rural Renewal Stream is a worker route for candidates with a job offer from an employer in a designated rural Alberta community, backed by an endorsement letter from that community. Alberta also runs entrepreneur options aimed at rural areas and at graduates of Alberta institutions:

StreamPurpose of the application
Rural Entrepreneur StreamBuy a business in Alberta and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the immigration authority
Farm StreamBuy, manage and operate a farm in an Alberta community
Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur StreamGraduates from outside Canada who intend to move to Alberta and settle in the province

AAIP documents: what you need to submit

Alongside general documents such as your passport and biometrics, an AAIP file normally includes:

  • Language test results
  • Education documents with a WES or equivalent credential assessment
  • A full CV and evidence of your work history, including pay records
  • A valid job offer, where the stream requires one
  • Proof of funds and business documents, for the entrepreneur streams

AAIP fees and costs

Besides general costs such as certified translations and a credential assessment, you pay an AAIP application fee to the Government of Alberta and, at the federal stage, IRCC fees for the permanent residence application, biometrics and the right of permanent residence. All amounts are in Canadian dollars and are paid online, not at a visa office. The table below summarises them.

StreamFee in Canadian dollars
Alberta Opportunity StreamCAD 1,500
Alberta Express Entry StreamCAD 1,500
Rural Renewal StreamCAD 1,500
Farm StreamCAD 3,500
Graduate Entrepreneur StreamCAD 3,500
Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur StreamCAD 3,500
Rural Entrepreneur StreamCAD 3,500

How does the AAIP application process work?

If you meet the criteria for a stream, you create an account in the AAIP portal and apply from there. Most worker streams now run on an Expression of Interest system: you submit an EOI, it is scored, and Alberta draws candidates from that pool. The Alberta Express Entry Stream works differently, through a Notification of Interest.
If you are selected you receive an invitation, upload your documents and pay the AAIP application fee. Processing times depend on the stream and on the number of files in the queue, so no fixed date can be promised. A successful file ends in a provincial nomination, not in permanent residence: with the nomination you apply to IRCC, and IRCC alone decides whether permanent residence is granted to you and your family.

How Aval Visa helps with an AAIP application

If you are considering immigrating to Canada and Alberta suits your occupation, the AAIP is worth assessing properly. It starts with a valid language test, an honest review of your work history and choosing the stream that actually fits your profile.

Aval Visa is led by Hadi Imani, a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC #R522575) authorised by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants. Using a representative does not change how Alberta or IRCC assess an application and cannot improve the odds of approval. What it does is make sure the file is complete, consistent and filed under the right stream, and that every deadline is met. To discuss your options, contact us.
