Between 5 January and 19 August 2026, IRCC held 49 Express Entry draws and issued 119,865 invitations to apply (ITAs). This analysis is built on IRCC’s own published draw data — the same file that powers the official “Rounds of invitations” page — and it describes a system that works very differently from how most applicants imagine it.
The single most important finding comes first: there has not been one general draw in all of 2026. A candidate with no French, no Canadian work experience, no category occupation and no provincial nomination received exactly zero of those 119,865 invitations.
Where the invitations went

French: the largest share, the lowest bar, and falling

The most recent draw of the year — 19 August 2026 — was a French draw: 5,000 ITAs at CRS 382, the lowest French threshold of the year.
The same week, the Canadian Experience Class draw closed at 523. The gap between the two main routes now stands at 141 points — the widest of the year, and moving in one direction: French keeps getting easier, Canadian experience keeps getting harder.
The pool: where the competition actually sits
Per IRCC’s official pool distribution (as of 16 August 2026), 226,859 candidates hold active profiles:
- Above 600: just 439 candidates — essentially all provincial nominees
- 501–600: 18,657 — competing for CEC cut-offs of 507+
- 451–500: 73,554 — the largest block, short of CEC and stranded without a category
- 401–450: 60,631
- 351–400: 48,600 — the French cut-off of 382 sits inside this band
The practical meaning: a CRS of 460 — once a strong score — now yields nothing without French, a category occupation, or a nomination. More than 134,000 candidates in the 401–500 range are in exactly that position.
Why French is currently the easiest route in
- The entry condition is clear: NCLC 7 in all four skills on TEF Canada or TCF Canada. No job offer, no Canadian experience, no specific occupation.
- French also raises your score: strong French adds up to 50 CRS points (with English at CLB 5+). The same investment opens the door and lifts you further inside it.
- The draws are frequent: roughly every two to three weeks in 2026, at 4,000–8,500 ITAs each.
- The policy is stated, not accidental: Canada’s francophone admissions target outside Quebec is 9.5% for 2026 and rising.
Realistically, going from zero French to NCLC 7 takes 12–18 months of serious study. That is a long runway — but it is the only route among the four that depends entirely on your own effort rather than an employer’s or a province’s decision.
Three findings that deserve their own line
- Physicians: CRS 169. The February draw for physicians with Canadian experience closed at 169 — the lowest cut-off ever recorded in Express Entry. For a physician who can obtain Canadian work experience, the points barrier has effectively ceased to exist.
- A nomination still beats everything: the 600-point provincial top-up clears any threshold. But PNP draws are small — 16 draws in 2026 averaging roughly 460 ITAs each.
- Your profile date breaks ties. The 19 August draw’s tie-break was 1 March 2026 — profiles submitted earlier win at equal scores. Enter the pool now, even while you are still strengthening your file.
What to do, by your current position
- Have NCLC 7 French? Enter the pool immediately. Cut-offs of 382–420 are reachable on modest profiles.
- Have Canadian work experience? CEC needs 507+ and is trending up. If you sit near the line, build French or pursue a nomination in parallel rather than waiting.
- Work in healthcare, trades or transport? Cut-offs of 467–477 are attainable without French — check your NOC code against the official category lists.
- None of the above? Bluntly: under the current pattern there is no draw for you until you build one of the four keys — French, Canadian experience, a category occupation, or a nomination. Of the four, French is the only one entirely within your own control.
