Do I need a job offer for the Rural Entrepreneur Stream?

No. Job offers belong to the separate Rural Renewal Stream, a worker pathway where a designated community endorses candidates holding full-time job offers from local employers. The Rural Entrepreneur Stream requires a business you own and operate — not employment.

What EOI score do I need to be invited?

There is no published minimum. The grid tops out at 175 points and AAIP does not disclose cut-offs. Practically, choosing a community under 10,000 people, investing above the $100,000 minimum, and reaching CLB 6 or higher are the strongest controllable score boosters.

Can I buy an existing business instead of starting one?

Yes. Business succession is expressly allowed, but you must acquire 100% ownership with a complete change of control. In return, the job creation requirement does not apply, and a succession buy-out earns 10 points on the grid.

Can my spouse’s assets and credentials count?

Yes. Both the $300,000 net worth and the $100,000 investment can come from the candidate’s and/or the spouse or common-law partner’s equity, and a spouse’s language results or education can add up to 5 adaptability points.

How long does the whole journey take?

Alberta publishes no fixed processing time for entrepreneur Business Applications. What is fixed: 120 days for EOI documents, 90 days to file the Business Application after an invitation, 14 days to sign the BPA, up to 28 days for the 205(a) letter, at least 12 months operating the business, and a 6-month nomination validity for the PR application. Plan in years, not months.
